SQUARE GROUPER BAR PICTURES
Jupiter, Florida Location Of Tropical Tiki Bar Used In The
Alan Jackson & Jimmy Buffett Music Video "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere."

As you walk through The Square Grouper's gate you immediately notice the natural wood decking, smooth sand and palm trees.  Below are pictures of the bar facilities.

So what is the meaning of "Square Grouper"?  Square Grouper is a term for a bail of marijuana that has been bundled and set afloat by drug smugglers.  The island of Bimini is in the Bahamas.  It's a short boat ride from the Jupiter Inlet.  For years Bimini was a favorite dropping ground for Colombian pot growers.  Smugglers would package bails of marijuana and drop them from airplanes.  Go fast boats would wait for the drop, then speed the bails across The Florida Straights to the Jupiter Inlet and other points along the South Florida coast.
In Bimini it was common for hundreds of these bails to wash ashore.  It's said that anglers would sometimes talk on their marine radios about large schools of "square grouper" swimming nearby.  Bails of pot and other drugs still occasionally wash ashore on Jupiter beaches.  The area is also a favorite for refugee smuggling.   Click here if you would like to sample more nautical stories from the local boating police blotter.

Until his death in 2001 Perry Como lived in nearby Jupiter Inlet Colony.  Como's former house is directly east of the Jupiter Lighthouse.
The home previously owned by Perry Como is easily seen from The Square Grouper.  Look northeast towards the home of Jupiter Inlet Colony.  Perry Como's place can be identified by it's distinctive thatched roof tiki-style shelter/dock just off the Intercoastal Waterway.

Alan Jackson's presence in Jupiter can be felt inside The Grouper.  Check out the Alan Jackson neon beer sign.  Below the sign are pictures taken on the day the video was shot and a framed one dollar bill signed by Jackson.  You can sign a dollar of your own and staple it to the walls if you like.  You can also play "the ring game" inside or look at a carved closet door from Alan Jackson's house.

DIRECTIONS TO THE SQUARE GROUPER BAR IN JUPITER
Take I-95 or Florida's Turnpike to Indiantown Road (Route 706) in Jupiter.  Head east about 5 miles on Indiantown Road.  After going over the Intercoastal Waterway bridge, take the first left on to U.S. 1 (head north.)
After Burt Reynolds Park, turn right (east) on to A1A.  Travel east a few blocks.  Look for Schooners Restaurant.  It's on the corner of Love Street and A1A.  Turn left (north) on Love Street and follow to the end.  Park in the dirt parking lot behind blue and green painted building.  Keep the parking lot noise and activity to a minimum... the neighbors complain frequently to the town council.
Note that there are no signs directing visitors to The Square Grouper.  You can also access the bar from the Castaways Marina docks.  Simply head in the Jupiter Inlet and look for the blue and green colored building across from the lighthouse.
