Welcome to Palm Beach Boating Guide's Castaways
Marina page. Thank you for visiting. This web site
features visitor information and two dozen photos of The Square
Grouper
bar at Castaways Marina.
The Square Grouper (also known as Castaways Marina,
Castaways, The Grouper, Castaways Jupiter Inlet Tiki Bar, etc.) is a colorful
tropical themed
tiki bar located in Florida's West Palm Beach area.
Specifically,
it's in Jupiter, Florida (20 minutes north of West Palm Beach) near the
famous Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse.
Some locals think of this place as a "real life Margaritaville."
The Square Grouper is the location used to shoot the bar
scenes in music video for "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" with
Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett. Click
here to see the Jackson-Buffett video "It's Five O'clock
Somewhere" streamed in its entirety.

Waterway
and the Jupiter Lighthouse are spectacular.
The Square Grouper is part of Castaways Marina. Alan
Jackson is a part time resident on nearby Jupiter Island.
Jackson sometimes visits The Square Grouper and knows its
owner. Jackson asked to use the bar for his music video because
of its beautiful
location.
The ambiance is tropical, like Holiday Isle in the middle Florida
Keys. The bar was built as a bait shack in 1970 to serve
anglers using the Jupiter Inlet. It was converted to a bar in
early 2003. The Square Grouper is accessible by boat or
by car.
It features a closet door from Alan Jackson's Jupiter Island
home. The bar's countertops are
made from materials salvaged during renovations to Perry Como's
house. Until his death Perry Como lived in nearby Jupiter
Inlet Colony. Como's former house is directly east of the Jupiter
Lighthouse. It can be identified by it's distinctive thatched
roof tiki-style shelter/dock just off the Intercoastal Waterway.
The
Square Grouper is located just inside the Jupiter Inlet, which is seen
in
the center of this picture.
The Jupiter portion of Alan Jackson's video was
shot on a somewhat rainy Saturday June 21, 2003. Jackson spent
that morning with his band aboard his 46-foot sportfish boat called
the "Hullbilly" (documented to Nashville.) Jackson is said to
keep another personal boat in the area christened the "Neon Rainbow."
During filming the Hullbilly cruised the waters off northern
Palm Beach County for the video's opening scenes. In
the afternoon of 6/21 the shooting moved to The Square Grouper. The
bar was a "closed set" with only a few Jupiter town officials on
hand to observe. The video's bikini clad partiers were locals.
A group of film students from
Jupiter's Dwyer High School were on hand for some exposure to a
professional production.
Following the boat and bar scenes shot in Jupiter, Jackson uses
a "magic door" that puts him on stage with Jimmy Buffett.
The concert scenes were shot at an actual Jimmy Buffett concert
on Thursday June 26, 2003 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Some of the people
holding "It's Five O'Clock here" signs where shot in Indianapolis.
The video features a brief shot of someone wearing a "Castaways"
logo shirt.
You can keep
your drink cold with a keepsake holder. You can rest it atop a
bar
made from parts of Perry Como's house.
"It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" was recorded in Nashville,
Tennessee and at Jimmy Buffett's Shrimp Boat Studio in Key
West, Florida. It's one of two new songs included on Jackson's
compilation album "Greatest Hits Volume 2." The song went to
number one on
the July 31, 2003 Billboard country music chart. On that date
Jackson was 44 years old and had recorded 29 previous #1 country songs.
Jimmy Buffett was 56. Early on Jackson thought "It's
Five O'Clock Somewhere" sounded like a Jimmy Buffett song, so he
called Buffett with an invitation. At one time Jimmy Buffett had
thought of being a country artist. He worked in Nashville prior
to moving to Key West in the early
70s. "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" is Buffett's second most
popular
song on the pop music chart. It's behind "Margaritaville" (#8 in
1977) and ahead of "Come Monday" (#30 in 1974) and "Cheeseburger In
Paradise" (#32 in 1978).
Picture of
Castaway's Marina as seen from the Intercoastal Waterway. A large
Friday Night crowd can be seen at the bar.
Jimmy Buffett lives on Palm Beach island in the West
Palm Beach area. Keep an eye out for his 42 foot Rybovitch
Express
Walkaround "Margaritavitch". It's the first in a limited line of
million
dollar sportfish boats Buffett helped design for nearby builder
Rybovitch
Spencer. Buffett has a northern home in Sag Harbor, New York.
There he drives a one-of-a-kind 19 foot Knowles flats boat.
Buffett likes to fish for striped bass on Long Island's flats.
In addition to the boats mentioned above, Alan Jackson
has a houseboat designed to look like his Center Hill Lake, Tennessee
home. There he also drives a little wooden boat called "Hoochie
Coochie" and MasterCraft ProStar 190.
A BRIEF, SHINING MOMENT
Best enjoy
Castaways' unique tropical ambiance while you can. Like Camelot,
it will likely only exist for one 'brief shining moment.' Neighbors
constantly complain to the City about noise and crowds from the
bar. They want The Square Grouper shut down. If the
neighbors don't succeed, Jupiter's will likely condemn the property
because of its extraordinary
views and use it for town's River Walk project.
Because the bar represents the last vestige of "old Jupiter"
people will talk about it for decades after it's gone.
Castaway's is
one of the best places to see the Jupiter Lighthouse.
DIRECTIONS TO THE SQUARE GROUPER BAR IN JUPITER
Take I-95 or
Florida's Turnpike to Indiantown Road (Route 706) in Jupiter.
Head east about 5 miles on Indiantown Road. After
going
over the Intercoastal Waterway bridge, take the first left on to
U.S.
1 (head north.)
After Burt Reynolds Park, turn right (east) on to A1A.
Travel east a few blocks. Look for Schooners
Restaurant. It's on the corner of Love Street and A1A.
Turn left (north) on Love Street and follow to the end.
Park in the parking lot
behind blue and green painted building. Keep the parking lot
noise and activity to a minimum... the neighbors complain
frequently to the town council.
There is limited street parking
near the Grouper. There is also an "after 5pm" lot located up Love
Street behind Schooner's Restaurant. It can be tough to park if
your vehicle has a trailer.
Note that there are no signs directing visitors to
The Square Grouper. Boater directions to
the Square Grouper: Take the Intercoastal Waterway to the
Jupiter
Inlet area. Castaways is located on the south side of the ICW,
across
from the Jupiter Lighthouse. Look for the blue and green
building. Click
here for more information on anchoring at the Square Grouper.
